For our Instagram competition with Nachtmann, I transformed my own garden into a summer evening in Positano – I took photos, filmed the reel, and realized: I don't want to keep this from you. Because that Positano feeling doesn't require a ticket to Campania.
How the magic happens
There's that one moment in summer when the air smells warm and a little salty, the light turns golden, and you wouldn't want to be anywhere else. Anyone who has spent an evening on the Amalfi Coast knows it. Those who haven't been there yet can still experience it. Right in their own garden, on the balcony, or at a simple kitchen table.
That's exactly the secret of Mediterranean table culture: it doesn't need a view of the Tyrrhenian Sea. It needs the right colors, the right materials, and the awareness that a set table is not an obligation – but a small staging of the beautiful life.
Here we show you how to transform your garden table into a summer evening in Positano – and what you need for it.

The color palette – it all starts with lemon yellow
When you think of Positano, you think of white and terracotta, the blue of the sea and the yellow of the lemons hanging on every house wall. These colors are not beautiful together by chance – they are the essence of Southern Italian summer.
For a table decoration that smells of Amalfi, we recommend the following palette:
Lemon yellow is your anchor color. Whether as a tablecloth, napkins, or plates with a lemon motif – this color immediately brings lightness and warmth. It is bold without being loud.
White and cream give the composition breathing room. White dinnerware, light tablecloths, or natural linen as a base – white makes the yellow shine and prevents the table from looking too colorful.
Crystal clear instead of color: Transparent objects like vases, carafes, and drinking glasses play with the light and create elegance without competing with the color palette. More on that in a moment.
Green as a natural companion: Fresh leaves, lemons on a branch, herbs in small pots, or real lemons that you simply drape on the table. Nothing looks more natural.
Table linen & dinnerware: the Mediterranean foundation
The tablecloth is the canvas. Everything else is composition.
Gingham or stripes in yellow and white are the timeless classic of Mediterranean table settings – light, playful, and immediately atmospheric. A yellow gingham pattern has something airy, almost childlike about it – and that's exactly the tone a summer evening in the garden should have.
Plate composition: He who plays with plates wins. A white flat plate as a base, with a deeper plate on top featuring a lemon motif or a golden rim – this is the principle found on every good table in Tuscany and on the Amalfi Coast. Stacked plates look more opulent and inviting than a single plate per place setting.
Material matters: Dinnerware made of matte stoneware or ceramic looks more personal and warmer than high-gloss porcelain. The slight unevenness of handmade plates is reminiscent of trattorias where the owner serves you himself.
Flowers & details that make all the difference
A set table without flowers is like an Aperol Spritz without ice – it works, but something's missing.
Small bouquets instead of large arrangements: Mediterranean table culture works with what nature currently offers. Three roses from your own garden, a few wildflowers, eucalyptus or rosemary in small glass vases – this looks deliberate and personal, not staged.
Lemons as a decorative element: This is the simplest and most effective trick. A few fresh lemons with leaves draped on the table, and you hardly need anything else. They smell good, look good, and immediately tell a story.
Candles and tea lights: Even during the day, small glass tea lights add depth to the table. In the evening, they become the most atmospheric lighting that no amount of money can replace.
Folding napkins correctly: Not origami-style, but loosely. A napkin simply placed next to the fork or casually tucked into a glass looks more elegant than any complicated fold. A delicate silk scarf as a napkin ring or loosely tied around the cutlery – that's the little trick that turns a beautiful table into an unforgettable one.
The glasses – why they decide everything
Now let's talk about what plays the actual starring role on a summer table: the glasses.
You can have the most beautiful tablecloth and the most lovingly arranged flowers – if the glasses look cheap or don't match the mood, the entire setting loses its magic. That sounds exaggerated. It's not.
For the Positano table, we fell in love with the Nachtmann Noblesse Tumblers – and not despite, but because of their tradition. The Noblesse glass is a classic from a Bavarian crystal glass manufacturer, found today in the best bars worldwide.
What makes it so special for a summer table?
The diamond-shaped cut of the crystal glass catches the light in a way no ordinary glass can. When the evening sun falls on the table and shines through the Noblesse tumblers, small light reflections appear on the tablecloth. This is not an exaggeration – it's physics, and it's beautiful.
The weight of the glass immediately signals quality when you pick it up. Good, heavy glasses elevate the moment. You drink slower, more consciously.
And they are dishwasher safe – which is not an unimportant detail when it comes to garden parties.
The Nachtmann Noblesse is available as tumblers (perfect for aperitivos, water, cocktails), as highball glasses, and as a carafe. We recommend deliberately mixing: tumblers and highball glasses side by side, with a slender carafe of lemon water in the middle. This looks rich, but never overloaded.

The light: the secret star of every garden party
No post about table decoration would be complete without a moment for the light.
The golden hour – the hour before sunset – is the window in which every table automatically looks dreamy. If you're planning a garden party, ideally plan it for 6 or 7 PM. Not because of the temperature, but because of the light.
Fairy lights strung above the table create the feeling of a small terrace in Ravello after dark. They are inexpensive, versatile, and can be reused season after season.
Candles in jars: The most beautiful tea light holders are often just empty jam jars or leftover crystal glasses. The light of a candle shining through cut glass is one of the most beautiful things you can have for free.
The shopping list for your Positano table
So you can get started right away – this is what we use and recommend for our summer table:
Tablecloth: Gingham pattern in yellow/white (cotton or linen blend)
Plates: White porcelain as a base, lemon motif plates as decorative plates
Napkins: Yellow linen napkins
Glasses: Nachtmann Noblesse Tumbler Set – our clear recommendation
Carafe: Also from the Nachtmann Noblesse series
Flowers: Small, colorful, loose – directly from the garden or market
Lemons: Fresh lemons with leaves, for decoration and for the carafe
Candles/Tea lights: In small glasses, unscented
Detail: A silk scarf as a napkin ring or table decoration accent
An evening no one forgets
The best thing about a beautifully set table is not the photo that comes out of it. It's the feeling for everyone who sits around it. The table says: this moment is worth it. These people are worth it. This summer is worth it.
The Positano feeling doesn't require a ticket to Campania. It needs lemon yellow, fresh flowers, the weight of a good glass in your hand, and the willingness to switch off everyday life for an evening. The rest, summer takes care of on its own.
Fittingly: What to drink on such an evening, we will soon show in our Aperitivo Drinks Guide. And what to wear, you'll soon find in our Dolce Vita Dressing Guide.
