Auf Schnäppchenjagd - Tipps für nachhaltiges Sale-Shopping

Bargain hunting - tips for sustainable sale shopping

By Lilia, Social Media at Princess Goes Hollywood

There's this moment during a sale that almost everyone knows. You're standing in front of a piece of clothing you would never usually look at. But it's 50% off, and somehow that feels like a win. Not a win. A trap.

Sustainable shopping isn't just about buying second-hand or avoiding every purchase. It means buying more consciously. Less, but better. And in a sale, that's sometimes easier said than done, because those red signs and countdown timers are specifically designed to make you stop thinking.

I know this from personal experience. I'm on social media every day, I see ads every day, I see others shopping every day. And I've learned: The best protection against impulse buys isn't a filter or an ad blocker. It's a plan.

Here are the tips that personally help me turn off the "sale brain" and turn on my "style brain."

1. Quality over discount percentage

The biggest discount is worthless if the item looks like it's been washed thirty times after only three washes. This sounds simple, but it's the principle everything else is built upon. It's better to invest in brands that place a high value on quality and durability, even if their discounts are smaller.

A good cashmere sweater that brings you joy for ten years is more sustainable than five impulse buys that end up in the used clothing bin after two seasons. And in the end, it's often even cheaper if you calculate the price per wear. Thinking of fashion as an investment changes how you shop.

2. The wish list: your best tool

Before you even open a single sale tab: Write down what you genuinely need. Not what would be nice. Not what you might eventually use. What is truly missing.

What have you missed recently? What item would you have liked to have when you stood in front of your wardrobe and couldn't find anything suitable? Answering these questions before the sale starts is the most effective thing I know. Add items to wish lists, directly in our sale section, and keep an eye on them. When they go on sale, you'll know immediately. And you'll only buy what you really wanted, not what the algorithm recommends.

3. Timeless pieces instead of trendy items

Sales usually feature items from the previous season. This isn't a problem, as long as you focus on classics instead of trendy pieces. A high-quality cashmere sweater will be just as beautiful next winter as it is this one. A statement trend piece from last season has missed its moment.

Timeless basics and easily combinable pieces always pay off, no matter when you buy them. They form the foundation of a wardrobe that works without you having to think about it every morning. That's the real luxury.

4. Think counter-cyclically

This sounds counterintuitive: buy summer pants in winter, a winter jacket in summer. But those who plan ahead save significantly and are also prepared when the season changes.

The best prices are often available precisely when everyone else has stopped looking. This requires some discipline, because you're buying an item you can't wear right away. But when winter comes and you pull out that piece you got for half price in July, the feeling is very good.

5. Patience pays off

At the beginning of a sale, discounts are often modest: 10 to 20 percent. Those who wait sometimes get 40 to 50 percent. Those who are particularly patient wait even longer.

However: If you've had an item in mind for a long time and finally see it on sale, grab it. Waiting for an even bigger discount and then it's sold out is frustrating and often leads to buying something as a substitute that you didn't even want. Patience is smart. Too much patience sometimes isn't.

6. Shop alone

This sounds like less fun, but I mean it seriously. Shopping with your best friend is more fun, that's undisputed. But it also leads to more impulse purchases. You egg each other on, buy out of frustration when the other person has already found something, lose focus.

It's better to go alone. Make the competent saleswoman your temporary ally. Or use the quiet hour at home in front of your laptop. Online shopping has an underestimated advantage: You can simply leave a full shopping cart, sleep on it, and decide if you really want everything. Most of the time, you don't.

7. Avoid peak times

Crowded stores, time pressure, stress. This is the fastest way to an impulse buy. When everyone is grabbing for the same items at the same time, it creates an artificial feeling of scarcity that limits your decision-making ability. You buy to buy, not because you need something.

If you can, shop on quiet mornings or simply online from home. Look at things calmly, decide calmly, buy calmly. This sounds trivial and yet it's the difference between a good purchase and one you regret a week later.

8. Stay informed and follow us

Being the first to know what goes on sale when gives you a clear advantage. On our Instagram and our new Facebook page, you'll find out immediately when favorite pieces are reduced. Those who are part of the Princess Club receive the information even earlier, directly in their inbox.

Conscious buying: the only sale rule that matters

In the end, it all comes down to one question: Would I want to buy this item even without the red price tag? If the answer is no, it's not a bargain. If the answer is yes, then congratulations on a good purchase.

Invest in quality, in timelessness, in pieces you truly love. Your wardrobe will thank you. And probably your wallet too.
